THE SEDUCTION OF CITY CENTER

THE SEDUCTION OF CITY CENTER

Located in a bay bathed by the Atlantic Ocean on the island of Madeira’s southern coast, Funchal is the capital of the Madeira Island chain. Its name comes from “funcho”, a wild herb once abundant at the time of its first settlement. In the shape of an amphitheatre, the municipality of Funchal extends along a slope ranging from sea level to 1,818 metres above sea level at Pico do Arieiro. The scenery is highly diverse, with year-round activities, attractions and entertainment.

The place where tradition meets cosmopolitanism.

Esmeraldo18 is located in one of the sides of the Praça Colombo, caracteristized by  the yelow buildings, in a early twenty century building. At fifty meter from Esmeraldo18, the century-old Avenida Arriaga is the city’s most sophisticated avenue. It is crowned by tree Grand Cafés, the Sé Catedral, and the cobled center avenue, the local call “Placa” which sets the stage for the locale’s largest social, cultural, and festive events. Next to it is Esmeraldo18, at Praça Colombo yellow painted buildings. Its incomparable location have transformed the “Praça Colombo” into the city’s living room – and the ideal location to live right in the centre of it all.

One hundred meter East   there´s Farmers’ Market (Mercado dos Lavradores), one of the milestones of Madeira’s capital, located right in the heart of Funchal’s historical city centre. Colours, aromas and tradition all combine to welcome and amaze those who visit. With a combination of Art Deco and Modernism, this market has the best that the island has to offer: the freshest and most exotic fruits, gorgeous flowers, meats, seafood, vegetables and local spices.

The Madeiran capital is full of history, cosmopolitanism, culture and entertainment and is the largest tourist center on the island.
